Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) recently flew a select group of motoring journalists and dealer principals to Thailand for an exclusive preview of its new Montero Sport SUV based on the Strada/Triton pickup. Our gracious hosts billeted us at the posh Ocean Tower of the Amari Orchid Resort Hotel in Pattaya.
On our first night, I decided to go with some colleagues around the area of the hotel to see what sights they had in store for us. We chanced upon an interesting mobile bar called “Cocktail Car”. It was a Volkswagen Kombi with the back part modified to become an open top bar on wheels.
We were introduced to Mitsubishi Dakar Team driver Hiroshi Masuoka, works driver famous for his back-back win of the Paris Dakar Rally in 2002 and 2003. Masuoka also took the time to take us around the Bira Circuit on the new Montero Sport in a very spirited pace.
After the drive, the Philippine delegation was also given a special tour of Mitsubishi Motors Thailand’s Laemchambang plant, where the Montero Sport SUV is being made along with the Triton pickup truck.
We were then brought to a big seafood restaurant by the river for a sumptuous meal. It was also the last autograph signing opportunity the Dakar Rally Champ so I had my id badge, and Mitsubishi cap signed.
After dinner, I was invited to go check out the action in South Pattaya by a dealership principal friend. It’s a busy entertainment strip that’s quite like no other once you get to experience it. They had virtually every form of entertainment you could think of there.
