Postcards from Pedring

I remember Ondoy clearly… well, in my case, as clear as that sleepy Saturday morning allowed.

I can still see those floodwaters rising on our street, black at first, and then turning into that sinister brown, telling us that it was already from the river nearby. There was nowhere to go. We were helpless about it.

On its 2nd year anniversary, in a fitting sense of irony, another storm came, packing strong winds and raising the river to alarming levels once again. On the way back to our home in Pasig, I decided to stop by the Marikina Riverbanks area and see how far along the river had come.

What I saw was chilling, especially those who know what Ondoy was really like. The waters had already breached the banks, and kept rising. The telltale depth marker was already at 17 meters, and by the time I returned to pass by again later in the afternoon, you couldn’t even see the marker anymore.

Thankfully, Pedring wasn’t to become another Ondoy, as the rains eventually did subside… but not before giving us a scare of a river gone wild again.
