When it comes to car audio, one name that immediately stands out is Pioneer, a leading automotive entertainment company that has been producing car audio equipment since the early 1960s. Among its many innovations, one model that continues to resonate strongly with enthusiasts and longtime fans is the Pioneer KP-500 Super Tuner cassette player.

With its unmistakable round tuning dial, sweeping needle display with green backlit numerals, tactile knobs, and smooth, reliable tape transport, the KP500 delivered a level of sound performance that enthusiasts still swear by, helping define the era, especially when paired with Pioneer speakers.

Building on this legacy, Pioneer introduced the Carrozzeria line of speakers in 1986 as a Japan-exclusive premium brand, positioned at the forefront of in-car audio technology. Now marking its 40th anniversary, Carrozzeria is celebrating with a special product lineup, including the revival of the 1980s-inspired parcel shelf speaker design that was a defining aftermarket staple.

What made the Carrozzeria TS-X11 popular back then was its self-contained 3-way design, combining a tweeter, midrange, and woofer in a single enclosure for strong, well-balanced sound. By mounting on the rear parcel shelf rather than inside the car doors, it avoided common acoustic limitations and projected audio more directly toward passengers. Just as importantly, its visible placement through the rear window made it a status symbol, signaling a premium car audio setup.

For its 40th anniversary, Carrozzeria is reviving the design with the TS-X40. Each unit features a 13 cm woofer, a 5.7 cm midrange, and a 1.7 cm dome tweeter, paired with Carrozzeria’s double-slit port bass reflex system. The housing returns to a matte silver finish inspired by the original models, accented by a blue-illuminated logo.

Staying true to its retro roots, the TS-X40 embraces the bold, boxy aesthetic of the 1980s, offering a more accessible way to revisit a classic era of car audio. It is set to launch in Japan in July 2026 and is designed to pair naturally with vintage Pioneer head units.
