Two years ago, Lotus was among the many car brands that ditched their plans to go full electric. Now, we’re getting a glimpse of what they will be making instead.

Following the announcement of their Focus 2030 business strategy, the storied British sports car manufacturer has confirmed they are working on their first-ever supercar – the Type 135.

A teaser image shows the rear end of the upcoming Lotus flagship supercar, which closely resembles the brand’s Theory 1 concept they showed back in 2024. The supercar has slim LED taillights with twin round exhaust pipes, and the Lotus lettering finished in gold.

Details are still fairly thin at this point, but Lotus says the Type 135 will feature a V8 hybrid powertrain making 1000 PS, and will be manufactured in Europe.

The way we see it, Lotus could source out the engine through three different manufacturers – Mercedes-AMG, Toyota, or a bespoke one made by Horse powertrains which is partly owned by the Geely Group – the company that currently owns Lotus.

Aside from the Type 135, Lotus has also highlighted its approach towards electrification. The brand said their product mix will consist of 60% hybrids, and 40% BEV. Lotus just started rolling out the X-Hybrid version of the Eletre in China this year, while customer deliveries in Europe will begin at the latter part of 2026.

Usually, Lotus names its models starting with the letter E. This makes us think the Type 135 could only be a codename for the supercar project. It’s been decades since we last saw a new Esprit from Lotus – will this finally be it?
