Gazoo Racing continues to refine the performance and driving characteristics of its all-wheel-drive models, the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. The best news for existing owners? They don’t get left behind with the updates.

Such is their latest release, which comes in two forms: One is a software package called the GR Yaris / GR Corolla Performance Software Series. This update allows owners to fine-tune the driving characteristics of their cars through a dedicated GR smartphone app, while the other is a performance upgrade for the GR Corolla that puts older models on par with newer models in terms of engine power output.

Beginning with the software package, the update is offered in three versions – Street, Circuit, and Competition. The Street software package adds things like a shift timing indicator on the instrument cluster, and enables customers to alter throttle response, 4-wheel drive distribution, coupling pre-torque, and electric power steering weight settings through the app.

The Circuit software package also has those features, but with added functions for racing. Those include a flat shift feature for 6MT models that enables you to change gears with your right foot planted on the throttle, and an anti-lag function setting called Strong+, which reduces turbo lag while increasing boost pressure for a more aggressive throttle response.

Lastly, the Competition software package allows GR owners to fine tune the all-wheel-drive torque distribution in 1% increments within the range of 70:30 to 30:70, along with the coupling torque. Gazoo Racing is also giving owners more precise steering weight customization in this package, as the GR Yaris offers up to eight options, ranging from lighter than the standard Eco/Normal modes to heavier than the standard Sport mode. The GR Corolla, on the other hand, offers three different settings tailored to various driving styles.

For the GR Corolla Performance Upgrade, the 2022-2025 models get hardware and software changes to put its specifications up to par with the latest models. This means older GR Corolla models are getting a bump in torque from 370 to 400 Nm, and can get hardware components such as brake ducts and undercovers with NACA ducts to help dissipate heat from the brake system and undercarriage.

All of these upgrades, as expected, come at a cost. In Japan, Toyota is charging up to JPY 265,100 (PHP 104,000) for the Competition software package, and up to JPY 166,232 (PHP 65,000) for the GR Corolla Performance Upgrade.

For now, the upgrade products are only available at Japan’s GR Garages. But hopefully, Toyota would offer these in other markets with GR dedicated outlets in the near future.
