Well, folks, it looks like BMW’s new obnoxious giant kidney grill is here to stay – even for their EV models. Supposedly making its reveal at Geneva this year, the new i4 Concept EV ought to leave hints at what we can expect from the production model i4 coming sometime in 2021.

Having the profile of a 4-series Gran Coupe, the i4 Concept EV enters the EV compact saloon segment that would likely rival the Tesla Model 3. But despite not having an internal combustion engine to cool in the engine bay, the big kidney grill will stay as a housing for an ‘intelligence panel’ that contains a variety of sensors.

As with the i-series lineup, we can see blue accents surrounding the prominent pieces of the BMW to distinguish it as an electric vehicle. From the looks of it, the body itself looks to be production-ready, although we can’t expect the faux rear diffusers nor the wheels to make it to production.

The interior too may look a bit too optimistic as far as production-ready vehicles go, but BMW says that the curved display screens act as a preview of what you can expect from future i models and the i4. On these screens, BMW says drivers can configure a variety of ‘Experience Modes’ that will operate under their latest operating system. The modes, dubbed ‘Core’, ‘Sport’, and ‘Efficient’ will each cater to certain circumstances of driving and are all pretty self-explanatory.

On the propulsion side of things, BMW will be using a single motor hooked up to an 80 kWh battery that’s good for 530 PS. That will get you to 100 km/h from a standstill in 4 seconds flat. Provided you have a light right foot, the BMW i4 Concept EV is rated to have a maximum cruising range of 430 km range (EPA), while the WLTP rating is at 600 km.

Whether or not these figures will be an accurate reflection of real-life conditions is, of course, subject to verification once the car reaches public hands, but for now, we will have to wait till 2021 to see the i4’s production version.
