Is GAC PH launching Emkoo's sibling, the GS4 Max HEV?

It appears GAC PH is doubling down on hybrids, with GS4 Max HEV getting DOE recognition

It looks like GAC Philippines plans to expand its lineup of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) in the not-so-distant future. While the brand already sells the Emkoo and GS8 HEVs, they also previewed the E8 HEV, which is a three-row MPV that the automaker plans to sell soon.

However, the E8 and GS8 HEVs could be joined by another electrified crossover, the all-new GS4 Max HEV. The vehicle recently appeared on the Department of Energy's (DOE) list of recognized HEVs and is listed as a 2027 model year vehicle. Despite having a different face, it's essentially the sibling of the Emkoo, as it comes with the familiar profile and distinct D-pillars.

Based on the initial specifications the DOE has revealed so far, the GS4 Max HEV for the Philippine market will apparently be offered in two distinct variants: GB and GL. Both will measure 4685mm long, 1901mm wide, and 1690mm tall on a 2750mm wheelbase.

It will have a 2.0L engine that will be assisted by an electric motor and a 2.1 kWh lithium ternary battery pack. The result is a combined system output of 173 kW or 235 PS. Power is then sent to the front wheels via a two-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) and will have various drive modes: Eco, Comfort, and Sport.

GAC claims the GS4 Max HEV can average up to 20.83 km per liter and has an estimated range of up to 1,250 km under ideal conditions. With those figures, the GS4 Max HEV is taking the fight against plug-in hybrid (PHEV) crossovers.

In other markets, the GS4 Max is available with 1.5L turbocharged engine, which puts out 176 PS and is coupled to a 7-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox.

So far, the automaker remains quiet about the GS4 Max HEV. But since the crossover is already on the DOE's website and is billed as a 2027 model year, we're curious as to when the brand will reveal the new electrified crossover. Here's to hoping we won't have to wait too long for the debut.
